Perhaps it is unfair to compare Lasdun's council housing with his luxury flats, built shortly afterwards, for the rich in St.James Place, overlooking Green Park.

Simple bold architectural forms, and Lasdun's emerging interest in layers or strata, are used on both.

While one may rightly expect and receive a high standard of finish on luxury housing it is abundantly clear that good quality concrete finishes are not affordable on council housing.

Furthermore the affluent can choose whether to live in a West End flat or a large suburban house, whereas the poor have no choice but the East End flat.
